Jean Mermoz (1901-36), celebrated aviator and pioneer of the Paris-South America air route, disappeared without trace while flying his hydroplane La Croix du Sud in the South Atlantic, 6 December 1936. Several medals commemorate the death of Mermoz; this particular one was designed by the marocain engraver Jean Tarrit.
