Estimate: £240–£280

Charles II (1660-1685), Crown, 1664, second bust, XVI, seven harp strings, no stop before dei (SC 70). Very fine, toned (£240-280)

Two bust variations exist for this year. Perhaps the most noticeable difference is the the ribbon: on some examples it is shorter and curlier, on others it is straighter and a little longer. This coin is the latter. (See the Willis Collection, part II for illustrations of the two variants).

In describing this coin, although quoting the new
SC numbers, we have retained the sequence of busts assigned by ESC as this is the arrangement most collectors and dealers are still most familiar with at present.
