Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Yangtze 1949 (C/SMX 795797 R. Banfield, St. Asst. R.N.) edge bruises, otherwise very fine and scarce

C/SMX 795797 Stores Assistant Robert Banfield was seriously wounded when H.M.S. London was shelled by Chinese Communists on the River Yangtze in going to the assistance of H.M.S. Amethyst on 21st April, 1949. He was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital, Honk Kong, from the U.S.S. Repose suffering from shrapnel wounds of the chest and bleeding from the lung.
The lot is sold with three original letters and a Telegram to his parents advising them of his wounds, a small photograph of the recipient and a contemporary news cutting.
