D.S.O. London Gazette 17 October, 1939, “For distinguished services rendered in the field in connection with the operations in Waziristan during the period 16 Dec. 1937 - 31 Dec. 1918.” - Lt.Col. Donald Powell, 1st Bn. 16th Punjab Regt., Indian Army (late Offg. Comdr. 3rd (Jhelum) Infantry Brigade.

Donald Powell served during the Great War in Mohmand, August to October 1915; and in German East Africa, from December 1916 to December 1917. He was wounded in East Africa on the 3rd August 1917 and invalided to England where he was attached to H.M. 3rd (Reserve) Hussars, following medical leave. He rejoined his regiment, now re-numbered as 1/16th Punjabis, in 1923; Extra A.D.C. to the Governor of Madras 1923-24; appointed second in command 1/16th Punjab Infantry, 3 July 1933; Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the regiment 3 July 1937; commanded the 3rd (Jhelum) Brigade in the operations in Waziristan, “Wastrike” Force, 1938 (despatches, D.S.O.); Temporary Brigadier (Brigade Commander) 16 March 1940.
