D.F.C. London Gazette 6 October 1942: Captain Louis Lazarus Gordon, 12 (S.A.A.F.) Squardon. The recommendation states: “During 9 months’ service with the Squadron Captain Gordon discharged his duties in an exemplary manner, and set a very high standard in thoroughness, keenness and enthusiasm for his job. He has developed a particular flare for night flying and is one of the stalwarts in the Squadron for this type of work; only by sending him on every night raid is it possible to keep him happy. Is a very efficient formation leader and has led the Squadron on some of its most difficult raids.”

Covering remarks by Officer Commanding 3 South African Wing state: “An exceptionally keen officer. Has taken part in 52 raids, which 41 have been in the present battle (27 May to 17 July). Led the Squadron on several occasions. Strongly recommended.” The attached list of his 52 raids records numerous operations against motor transport, tanks and gun positions in the area immediately around the Alamein Box during July 1942.
