M.C. London Gazette 1 February 1919: Lieutenant, 1/1st Cambridgeshire Regiment “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack west of Morlancourt on 8th August 1918. He led his platoon against a strong enemy position with great dash, gained his objective, and captured over 100 prisoners. In the attack on Morlancourt on 9th August he again showed great skill in handling his platoon, showing complete disregard for danger and was largely responsible for the success of the operation.”

Lieutenant Alfred Jackson served with the 1st South African Mounted Rifles in German West Africa, from August 1914 to July 1915, and in France from February 1916. He was commissioned in 1917 into the Cambridgeshire Regiment and was wounded by a gunshot in the hand on 22nd August during further operations around Morlancourt, one of 12 officer casualties in the battalion on that day. Jackson was discharged from hospital in April 1919 and instructed to report to the 3rd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, prior to returning home to South Africa. Sold with copies of the War Diary which gives full details of the attacks of the 8th-9th August.
