R.V.M. awarded 13 June 1959: Page of the Backstairs.

Stanley William Childs was born on 14 January 1907 and entered the service of King George V in July 1927. He made the normal progression from Footman to Page of the Presence, and finally Page of the Backstairs. He became Page to the Duke of Edinburgh and later to Queen Elizabeth, and was in constant daily attendance as as their Butler. He was very much a servant of the old school and found it hard to adapt to the changing times, being chided on one occasion at Cowes by the Duke for his somewhat dated rig-out. Childs suffered a severe stroke whilst on duty, leaving him permanently paralysed down one side, and saw out the rest of his life at the Royal Hospital for Incurables in South London, where he died on 24 December 1975. Sold with four copy photographs which include Childs.
