Major Thomas Donovan served with the Cape Regiment from 1827 but was on leave in Europe during the first war of 1834-35. He took part in the second and third wars and commanded the advance guard which forced the Fish River in May 1846, slaying two adversaries single-handed when faced by four Kaffirs.
