A Great War D.C.M. group of three awarded to Private W. Bryant, Rifle Brigade, late Mercantile Marine

DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL, G.V.R. (S-28769 Pte., 1/Rif. Bde.); BRITISH WAR MEDAL (Pte., Rif. Bde.); MERCANTILE MARINE WAR MEDAL (William Bryant)polished, good fine (3)

D.C.M., London Gazette, 10 January,1920. 'For marked courage during the attack on the village of Presau on 1st Nov. 1918. When his section was held up by machine-gun fire he personally rushed the gun from a flank, capturing it and killing four of the enemy gunners. Later on he captured twenty prisoners. He led his section splendidly throughout the day, at the end of which he had captured fifty prisoners.’

An exceptional citation which may well have been worthy of the Victoria Cross had it not been so late in the war.
