BOER WAR MEMORIAL MEDAL, 'To the memory of those who gave their lives for Queen and Country', bronze 52mm, by Emil Fuchs, inscribed on the edge (In memory of Col. Robt. Gunning, who fell leading his men, Oct. 19th 1899) together with original printed despatch from Major W. Pictairn Campbell, Commanding 1st Bn. King's Royal Rifles, to The Officer Commanding Troops, Glencoe Camp, October 21st 1899, giving an account of the action and recommendations of individual gallantry, good very fine

Lieut.-Colonel Robert Henry Gunning, commanding 1st K.R.R.C., was killed in action at the battle of Talana Hill on 20 October 1899. He had served previously with the 60th Rifles in the Zulu War and in Burma. At Talana, he fell while leading his battalion in the attack and was buried in the cemetery below Talana Hill, close to where he fell.
