John Roberts served in the flotilla at the siege of Cadiz, and at the defence of Fort Matagorda in 1809 and 10. He served as Admiralty Midshipman aboard H.M.S. Minden at the battle of Algiers, and for his conduct on that occasion was promoted Lieutenant in 1816.
