John McDermott enlisted at Woolwich in February 1812, aged twenty-seven. He received rapid promotion and by May of the same year had become Sergeant. He served in Spain with Murray's troop, and subsequently Horsell's troop, from October 1812 until August 1814. McDermott embarked for Flanders on 17 May 1815 and eight days later was promoted Troop Sergeant Major. His conduct at Waterloo must have been distinguished because on 29 June 1815, he was recommended for a commission by Major General Digby Hamilton, and was duly gazetted Cornet on the 7 July. McDermott was placed on half pay in June 1816 and his death is recorded in the Army List for 1823.
