William T. Britain was born in Grinley, Nottingham, and enlisted in May 1804 at the age of twenty one. He is listed by name in the Regimental History amongst those having distinguished themselves in the Peninsula, the south of France and at Waterloo. Britain's service amounted to 21 years and 12 days, including 2 years for Waterloo, when he was discharged in June 1823 due to various ailments affecting his legs. Throughout his service, which was described as 'particularly good', he held the rank of Trumpeter.
