James Russell was born at Barony, near Glasgow, and enlisted there at the age of eighteen, for unlimited service, in September 1798. He progressed through the ranks and at Waterloo was in the senior position of Troop Sergeant Major of Captain Poole's troop. Russell, although not wounded at Waterloo, was discharged in October 1821 'in consequence of being unfit for further service having received a severe contusion on his breast and right testicle when the Regiment was reviewed by His late Majesty on 24th Sept. 1802 on Ashford Common, the effects of which accident he has never since entirely recovered.' His conduct as a soldier was described as 'extremely good an excellent soldier and a worthy man.'
