Served with the 1st Airborne Division, formed in 1941. The Brigade took part in the North African Landings as part of the First Army; the Sicilian Landings as part of the Eighth Army, and the Italian Campaign until the spring of 1944. The Division was reassembled in England as part of 1st Airborne Corps and took part in Operation Market Garden, being dropped at Arnhem. Private Whatmore is recorded as a prisoner of war but no camp details are known.
