Corporal Tilley was an employee of Bourneville and the following details were taken from the works magazine: 'Awarded the Military Medal for valour in France on April 16th last. During the taking of a well known ridge, amid rain, hail, and snow, the battalion met with a fierce resistance, but stormed the enemy trench and gained their objective. Corporal Tilley was in charge of a machine gun, and his entirely successful handling of it was the cause of his distinction. Corporal Tilley worked in the Chocolate Grinding Department, and has been with the firm seventeen years. He has sisters in the Essence Room and the Confectionery Department.

He was killed in action on 4 October 1917.
