Alfred Henry Howes attested for the Medical Staff Corps on 13 March 1893, but was transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment two days later. He served in the Sudan campaign of 1898 and, having passed a course in Telegraphy on 18 May 1899, served during the campaign in China 1900-1901.
