Arthur Seymour Toogood served in the Sudan Campaign of 1898. He was in Ceylon at the outbreak of the Boer War and volunteered to accompany the Ceylon Mounted Contingent to South Africa. This small colonial unit comprised 5 officers and 125 men nearly all mounted on trained horses at the full expense of the colony. He was present at the operations in the Orange Free State including actions at Vet River and Zand River; in the Transvaal including actions near Johannesburg, Pretoria and Diamond Hill, and also Belfast. He served in India on the North West Frontier in 1908 and during the Great War was in command of a Depot in England. He was awarded the O.B.E. on 3 June 1919, and died on 12 August 1968.
