Thomas Dunbar Seymour was born at Ballymore Castle, Co. Galway, in 1869, his family being a younger branch of the ducal house of Somerset. He volunteered for service in South Africa and joined the Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry in January 1900, being discharged at the end of the war. During the Great War he served in the 6th Dragoons and 30th Divisional Mounted Troops, R.A.S.C.
