Charles John Sackville-West was born on 10 August 1870, son of Colonel Hon. W.E. Sackville-Wesr, Grenadier Guards. He was educated at Winchester and R.M.C. Sandhurst, and entered the King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1889. He served in the expedition to Manipur in 1891 as Orderly Officer to Brigadier General Graham and was mentioned in despatches. He also served during the operations in Burma, in the Chin Hills in 1891-92. In the South African War he served as A.D.C. to Sir Redvers Buller and was three times mentioned in despatches. In the European War he was twice wounded and mentioned in despatches five times; received Brevet of Colonel, promoted Major-General. He was the British Representative of the Supreme War Council at Versailles 1918-19, and Military Attache in Paris 1920-24. He was created C.M.G. in 1915, K.B.E. in 1919, C.B. in 1921 and held the Legion of Honour, D.S.M. of U.S.A., Croix de Guerre of Italy and France, and was Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy. His last official appointment was as Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey and its dependencies 1925-29. He succeeded to the title as 4th Baron Sackville in 1928, retired in the following year and died on 8 May, 1962.
