Patrick Flanagan was born at Portumna, Co. Galway; during the Easter Rising, 1916, he formed part of the Boland's Mill Garrison and fought under Eamon de Valera; after the surrender of Boland's Bakery, Flanagan was imprisoned at Wakefield and later interned at Frangoch; Lieut. 1917 and Capt. 1918 of C. Coy. 3rd. Bn. Dublin Brigade; in 1919, as officer commanding his unit he was nearly captured when drilling some men on Three Rock Mountain, Co. Dublin; took part in the attack on the British H.Q. Charlemont Bridge, Dublin, Jan. 1921; commanded 30 members of the unit in the attack and the burning of Custom House, one of the last to leave the scene, he escaped over railings under heavy machine gunfire; was in charge of a number of ambushes, including engagements at Clonturk and Crumlin, Co. Dublin. Patrick Flanagan one of the founders of Eire, died 10th February, 1935, and was buried with full military honours, Eamon de Valera and many of his old comrades were present.
