John Flint served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98 with the Tirah Expeditionary Force (Horse shot, medal with two clasps). He was promoted Major in the 1st Dragoon Guards on 22 December, 1897 and, with the rank of Colonel, was Commissioner of the Mashonaland Division, British South Aftican Police, from 26 July, 1901 until October 1903.
