INDIAN MUTINY 1857-58, 1 clasp, Defence of Lucknow (Corpl. C.E. Jones, 32nd L.I.) nearly extremely fine

Corporal Charles Edward Jones was killed in action at the disastrous affair at Chinhut on the 30th June 1857. He was born in 1832 in the Parish of St. Alkmund, Shrewsbury, and enlisted into the 9th Foot at Shrewsbury on the 17th November 1849. He transferred to the 32nd Foot in 1852 and left for India in July 1853. On arrival he proceeded to Kossowlie to join his regiment and his brother - 2815 Private Thomas Jones who had enlisted in 1846 and seen action in the Punjab Campaign. Both of these men were killed in action at Chinhut in circumstances that are recorded in the 'Chronical of Private Henry Metcalfe': 'Another instance of brotherly love and self sacrifice. A bony young man, by name Jones, was being conveyed back on a gun carriage after being wounded. Saw his brother being struck down with a bullet from the enemy, and without the least warning he jumped off the limber on which he was riding and joined his brother to be killed with him' Sold with further research and confirmation.
