WATERLOO 1815 (Lieut. I.E. Greaves, 1st Reg. Dragoon Guards) fitted with original steel clip and replacement silver bar suspender, light edge bruises and contact marks, otherwise very fine and scarce

Joseph Edward Greaves fought at Waterloo with the King's Dragoon Guards which, with the Life Guards and Royal Horse Guards, formed the 1st Cavalry Brigade under Major General Lord Edward Somerset. No other British Cavalry regiment suffered as heavily in pure numbers of killed, wounded and missing, as the King's Dragoon Guards. Greaves assumed the surname of Elmsall in 1817 and died in 1851 as Lieutenant Colonel on the retired list. His son William de Cardonnel Elmsall served with distinction in the Crimea, as Major in the 1st Dragoons, and was wounded at Balaklava.
