Vinicombe Pasha was a British subject who served in the Turkish Army, circa 1882-1914, reaching the rank of Major-General with the title Pasha. He was in Turkey for some 40 years and, as a fortification and armaments expert, he had a great deal to do with defence of the Dardanelles, and the Forts on the Turkish-Russian border. He was still in the Turkish Army when she entered into the 1914-18 War, and in view of his knowledge of the Turkish defences, was under 'house arrest' during the period of hostilities, although his family was allowed to return to England.
