Seth Mason was born in Standish, Lancaster, and was a collier by trade. He attested for the 6th Foot at Bolton on the 16th May, 1809, at the age of eighteen. He served abroad with the regiment in Portugal, 6 months, Spain, 2 years, France, 3 years, America, 1 year, Cape of Good Hope, 4 years and in the East Indies for 9 years.
