Scotland, Bute, Rothsay, a Spanish-American cut Third Dollar, obverse counrerstamped PAYABLE AT ROTHSAY MILLS around 1/8 in circle, with serif at base of Y of ROTHSAY (Davis 64; Seaby 5T97; ef Allen 27-9). Countermark fine, undertype worn almost flat

The Rothsay Cotton Mill, built in 1779, was the first to be established in the West of Scotland. The tokens were issued by William Kelly, for use 'at the company shop' (Allen catalogue, p.6).
