An important Kaffir campaign medal awarded to Lieutenant-General George Napier, C.B., commanding the Cape Mounted Riflemen, later Colonel-in-Chief of the Cheshire Regiment

George Thomas Conolly Napier was the son of General Sir George Thomas Napier, K.C.B. He commanded the Cape Mounted Riflemen at the battle of Gwanga, and throughout the Kaffir War of 1846-47, for which services he received the Brevet rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He also commanded the regiment throughout the Kaffir War of 1850-52 being present at the action at Boomah Pass, and commanded the Cavalry Brigade at the action of the Berea, for which he was nominated a C.B., London Gazette 31st May 1853. He later served as Assistant Adjutant General of Canada, was Aide-de-Camp to the QUEEN, and was appointed to the Colonelcy of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment in May, 1872. He died in London on the 5th May, 1873, aged 57.
