Johannes Hendrik du Plooy was born in Pretoria on 13 March 1919, and served as a Private in the 2nd South African Police Battalion from 25 June 1940. He was taken prisoner at Tobruk and was held as a prisoner of war in North Africa, Italy and Germany from June 1942 until April 1945. He was discharged in September 1945 and resumed his career as a policeman at Frankfort, Orange Free State.
