Mary Ethel Weston was born in Kent, England, on 26 August 1878. She trained as a nurse at Perth Public Hospital, Western Australia, and enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 21 November 1914, as a Staff Nurse. She embarked for the Middle East with A.A.N.S. reinforcements on 13 December 1914, and served with 1st Australian General Hospital in Cairo.
