Hugh Dillon Massy Minchin was originally gazetted into the 7th Royal Fusiliers in 1875, and transferred to the Poona Horse in 1879. During the Second Afghan war he took part in the Defence of Kandahar, the sorties to Khairabad, and Deh Khwaja, in which his horse was shot, and the battle of Kandahar. Transferring to the 1st Bombay Lancers, he took part in the Burma Expedition of 1885-87 and was promoted to Captain in 1886. He was subsequently Special Service Officer and Camp Magistrate at Ahmednugger, 1892, was promoted to Major in 1895, and served as Cantonment Magistrate at Belgaum. Appointed Lieutenant-Colonel, Indian Staff Corps, in 1901, he was serving as Cantonment Magistrate at Poona and Kirkee when he died on active service on 17 July 1904.
