Charles Latter was born at Yalding, near Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and enlisted for the 84th Regiment at Tunbridge Wells on 20 December 1850. He served with the 84th throughout the Indian Mutiny and was present with Havelock’s relief column at Lucknow and subsequent defence and capture of Lucknow (Medal with clasps Defence of Lucknow and Lucknow, and 1 years’ additional service for siege of Lucknow). He transferred to the 44th Regiment in February 1859 and served with them in China in 1860 (Medal with clasp), and again transferred, to the 1st Foot (Royal Scots), in April 1862. He was promoted to Corporal in August 1865 and finally discharged on 15 August 1871. Sold with copy service papers.
