Lieutenant Colonel William Hewett, third son of General Rt. Hon. Sir George Hewett, G.C.B., Commander-in-Chief in India, was born in 1795, educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and on 19th December, 1811, appointed Ensign in the 22nd Foot. He held subsequent appointments in the Bourbon Regiment, 33rd Foot and 92nd Foot before being brought on full pay in the 3rd battalion 14th Foot on 15th April, 1815. Thus at the age of 19 years he served as a Captain at Waterloo and at the occupation of Paris. He removed once again to the 33rd Foot in 1816, and to the Rifle Brigade in 1823. Having been promoted Lieutenant Colonel, unattached, 19th August, 1828, Hewett retired from the service in June, 1836, but outlived all his brother officers to become the last surviving British officer who had fought at the memorable battle of Waterloo. Lieutenan- Colonel Hewett died at Southampton, 26th October, 1891, aged 96.
