Alan Douglas Seddon served in France and Flanders from 15th January to 8th May, 1915. He held a Special Appointment (Class FF, Intelligence) in the Black Sea, 15th April to 3rd November, 1919; Police Control Officer in the Black Sea, 11th May to 19th December, 1920, and continued to be specially employed in the Black Sea area until 10th October, 1923. He was re-employed during the Second World War with the rank of Major, G.S.O. grade 2. The cross of the Archangel Michael was established in 1918 by the Urals Forces Council (Krug), to be awarded equally to officers and other ranks of the Ural Cossack forces who displayed valour and fortitude in the fight against the Bolsheviks on the Urals front.
