Gunner Adam Fenton was assigned, on mobilization, to the Royal Marine Artillery Battalion which formed part of the so called 'Flying Column', and between 27/31 August 1914, he found himself involved in the fighting at Ostend, where he was slightly wounded. On returning to France with the main body of the Royal Marine Brigade, Fenton was again wounded during the fighting around Dunkirk between 7/18 October 1914. After a short stint of more peaceful service at Eastney Barracks, he joined 'B' Battery of the R.M.A. Anti-Aircraft Brigade, serving with the unit right up until the end of the war and winning the D.S.M. Sold with full research. Approximately 17 awards of the D.S.M. were given to the AntiAircraft Brigade in W.W.I.
