Staff Sergeant Walter Cowell was killed in Italy in 1944. He had been abroad for four years. He died with tragic suddenness, though in great heroism. He had gone in front of our lines to rescue a wounded comrade, when a land-mine exploded, and Walter was killed. (See cutting with medals).
