Lieutenant Commander Alan Keith Hornstein entered the Royal Navy as Assistant Clerk, 15 January 1905. He served as Assistant Paymaster on H.M.S. Fox in Somaliland and in the Persian Gulf. During the Great War he served in various ships including 'Bellerophon' and 'Centaur' with the 4th Battle Squadron. His post war service included the aircraft carriers 'Argus' and 'Eagle.' At some point in 1916 he changed his surname to Lowdell and his Great War medals are so named.
