Lieut-Colonel Walter Sydney Masterman was born on 19 December 1876 and educated at Weymouth College and Christ's College, Cambridge. He served in the South African War with the 3rd Battalion The Welsh Regiment as a Railway Staff Officer. He was at some time a Knight of Grace of St John but was removed from the Roll of the Order owing to his having been convicted by the Civil Powers.' vide London Gazette, 5 June, 1923.
