Patrick Kirkman Hodgson C.M.G., C.V.O., O.B.E. was born in 1884, the son of Robert K. Hodgson and Lady Norah, 3rd daughter of the 9th Earl of Cork. He was educated at Radley and Trinity College, Oxford (M.A.), and was Clerk in the House of Lords, 1908-1914; he served in the European war as a Major in the Suffolk Yeomanry and later as Assistant Military Secretary to G.O.C. 3rd Army, B.E.F. (despatches, O.B.E.); Hodgson became Private Secretary and Comptroller to the Governor General of Canada, Lord Byng of Vimy, in 1922 and for this service was awarded the C.M.G. in 1926. He then served as Private Secretary to H.R.H. Duke of York (later King George VI) and was awarded the C.V.O. in 1927, retiring from office in 1933.
