NEW ZEALAND 1845-66, dated 1864 to 1866 (Lieut. W. A. Kay, 68th Lt. Infty.) first initial and letter of surname double stamped, nearly very fine

Sir William Algernon Kay, 5th Baronet (creation of 1803) was born in 1837 and educated at Sherborne. He entered the army in 1855 as an Ensign, 68th Light Infantry and served with them in the New Zealand War in 1864-66, and was present at the attack on Gate Pah (medal). He was promoted Major in 1876, retiring in 1880, and succeeded his half brother as 5th Baronet in 1907. He died on 11 October, 1914, and was succeeded by his son, Captain William Algernon Ireland Kay, K.R.R.C.
