The Second Afghan War medal awarded to Gunner J. Carver, “E” Battery “B” Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery, who was wounded at the battle of Maiwand, 27 July 1880

Afghanistan 1878-80, 1 clasp, Kandahar (5062, Gunr. J. Carver, E. Batt: B. Bde. R.H.A.) contained in a contemporary fitted case, lid detached, otherwise toned, brilliant extremely fine £2400-2800

John Carver was born at Kirby Muxloe, near Leicester, and enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Leicester on 8 March 1878, aged 21 years. He was posted to “E” Battery “B” Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery, and was present at the battle of Maiwand, 27 July 1880, being wounded by a shell necessitating the amputation of the little finger of his right hand with a portion of his ring finger. He was consequently discharged at Woolwich on 5 September 1881.

“E” Battery “B” Brigade, R.H.A., won a C.B., two V.Cs and eight D.C.Ms for gallantry at Maiwand. The battery suffered losses amounting to 3 officers and 18 men killed, and one officer and 12 men wounded. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
