Walter Jay was born in the Parish of Kettleburgh, near Framlingham, Suffolk, and enlisted into the Suffolk Regiment at Woodbridge on 10 October 1883, aged 19 years, having some previous service in the Militia Artillery. He Served in the East Indies from September 1885 to February 1891, and took part in the Hazara campaign of 1888. He was discharged on 9 October 1895, on termination of his limited period of engagement. Sold with copied discharge papers.
