1822 Pattern Rifle Officer’s Presentation Sword to Captain H.G. Sutton 40th Lancashire (3rd Manchester) Volunteer Corps., the 81.5 cm blade with single fuller by J. & W. Wood, King St., Manchester is etched overall with scrolling foliage crowned VR cypher strung bugle horn and presentation panels ‘Presented To Captain H.G. Sutton By The Members of No. 8 Company 40th L.R. Volunteers On His Promotion As A Token Of Their Most Sincere Regard 28th Day Of February 1874’, on the reverse a further etched section ‘40th Lancashire Rifle Voltrs.’, the exceptionally ornate pierced hand guard features a crowned strung bugle horn foliate panels side panels of Union sprays wire bound fish skin grip with back strap of ornate oak sprays contained in its plated scabbard this with three highly decorative panels, the sword in overall excellent condition, the scabbard similar but with one very minor dent £1000-1200

Note: Sold with a considerable amount of research concerning Sutton’s career. In brief he was a self-made man being called to the Bar in January 1876 and was promoted to Lieut. Col. in 1876 but resigned his commission in 1879 although only 36 yrs old. This was possibly due to what was then considered a disgrace being in debt regarding a mortgage.
