Frederick Stanford was born in Plymouth on 28 September 1864. He enlisted into the Royal Navy on 28 September 1882, re-engaging in November 1892 and again in November 1902. Attained the rank of Master-at-Arms in June 1899. Discharged in 1907 he joined the R.F.R. Mobilised in August 1914, he served on H.M.S. Vivid I and Endymion until March 1916.
