Estimate: £80–£100

Maximus (235-238), Denarius, 236-8, Rome, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. Providentia standing left, holding wand over globe and cornucopia, 2.73g (RIC 20; C 75). Good extremely fine, reverse a little soft, wonderful portrait (£80-100)

Maximinus was born in Thrace of peasant stock. A natural and very able soldier, he entered the Roman army and rose through the ranks. Ancient writers describe him as a barbarian and almost illiterate. They also speak of his great size and prodigious strength. His humble origins, powerful personality and physique are certainly suggested by the stunning portrait on the present coin
