China 1900, 1 clasp, Relief of Pekin (H. F. Whiteway, P.O. 2 Cl., H.M.S. Barfleur) minor scratch to obverse and edge bruise, good very fine £240-280

Henry Frederick Whiteway was born in Bromley, Middlesex. He enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 18 July 1892 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in August 1893. Promoted to Ordinary Seaman in September 1894 when on H.M.S. Mersey and Able Seaman in July 1896 when on H.M.S. Grafton. Served on H.M.S. Barfleur, October 1898-January 1902, seeing service in China and being promoted to Leading Seaman in December 1899; Petty Officer 2nd Class in May 1900; Petty Officer 1st Class in November 1901 but reduced to Leading Seaman in December 1901. Whiteway was further reduced to Able Seaman in May 1902 when on H.M.S. Wildfire but regained his rating of Leading Seaman in May 1905 when on H.M.S. Albion. He received further promotions to Petty Officer 2nd Class in September 1905 when at H.M.S. Pembroke and Petty Officer 1st Class in November 1906 when on H.M.S. Irresistible. During the Great War he served on St. Vincent, Leander (?), Attentive, and Pembroke I. Pensioned in October 1919. With copied service papers.
