Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 7 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, South Africa 1901 (3002 Pte. F. Sykes, Yorkshire Regt.) last clasp loose on ribbon, edge bruising, contact marks, nearly very fine £180-220

Fred Sykes was born in Middlesborough. A Joiner by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, he attested for full-time service with the regiment at Richmond on 30 December 1889, aged 27 years. With the regiment he served in India, November 1890-November 1892; Burma, November 1892-January 1896; and India, January 1896-February 1898. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1898 but recalled to the Colours in November 1899, serving in South Africa , November 1899-January 1902. Sykes was discharged having completed his period of service on 30 April 1902. In addition to the above, Sykes was awarded the I.G.S. Medal with clasps for Punjab Frontier 1897-98 and Tirah 1897-98. With copied service papers which confirm clasps.
