Three: Flight Sergeant T. F. Winters, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, an Air Gunner who was mentioned in despatches for a tour of operations in Lancasters of No. 115 Squadron in 1944

1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; War Medal 1939-45, M.I.D. oak leaf, extremely fine (3) £250-300

Winters commenced his training as an Air Gunner in December 1943 and, having qualified in the new year, was posted to No. 115 Squadron, a Lancaster unit operating out of R.A.F. Witchford.

Teaming up with Flying Officer Stechman’s crew, he flew his first sorties - including a strike on Stuttgart - in July 1944.

Thereafter, he flew around a dozen sorties against French targets, including three trips to Le Havre, two to Calais and one to Pont-Remy, from which his Lancaster returned home on three engines.

The remainder of his tour was taken up with German targets of the heavily defended kind, including Cologne, Dortmund, Essen, Frankfurt, Saarbrucken and Stettin. Tour ‘expired’ in October 1944, he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 14 June 1945, refers).

Sold with the recipient’s original R.A.F. Navigator’s, Air Bomber’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, covering the period December 1943 to October 1944.
