Five: Squadron Leader E. F. P. Wheller, Royal Air Force

1939-45 Star; Air Crew Europe Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, mounted as worn, very fine or better (5) £300-350

Edgar Francis Pursey Wheller was born at Bridgwater, Somerset in December 1917 and qualified for his Air Ministry’s pilot’s licence in August 1937. Commissioned Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force in the same year, he was promoted to Flying Officer in April 1940 and Flight Lieutenant in April 1941. Having then been advanced to war substantive Squadron Leader in December 1943, he was ‘Seconded for Special Duty’ in May 1944.

His earlier period of service is believed to have been in Army Co-operation units and an accompanying photograph indicates active service in Mustangs - possibly of No. 26 Squadron. He was released from the Service in May 1946 but remained on the Reserve of Air Force Officers until the 1950s.

Sold with a quantity of original documentation, comprising the recipient’s R.A.F. Service and Release Book, his Air Ministry Certificate of Competency and Licence to Fly, dated 12 August 1937, and a wartime photograph.
