William S. Gray was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on 14 November 1885. A Carpenter by occupation, he enlisted into the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Hamilton on 2 September 1915. Serving with the 13th Battalion Canadian Infantry (Royal Highlanders of Canada) he was killed in action at Vimy Ridge on 16 April 1917.

The official report of his death states: ‘Previously reported wounded, now killed in action. He was killed instantly by enemy shell fire, while he was advancing with his Battalion to an attack at Vimy Ridge.’
